SPECIAL NEEDS
EDUCATION

Empowering children with hearing
loss to learn to listen and speak

Teachers follow a natural language acquisition approach by prioritising auditory learning and incorporating listening and spoken language strategies and techniques.

Learners are immersed in language rich experiences that involve continuous listening opportunities, supported by appropriate hearing technology. We actively encourage parents to extend this engaging learning environment into their homes. Our curriculum is carefully crafted to include hands-on experiences, outings, and themed activities that align with the focus of each week’s module. Furthermore, our classrooms are acoustically treated and equipped with observation rooms to facilitate monitoring and guidance.

In order to provide comprehensive support for students on their developmental paths, a dedicated team of specialists, therapists, and a social worker offer personalised assistance. Collaborating closely with teachers, they work together to navigate challenges and nurture progress in speech-language acquisition for each individual student

PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAMME

The primary goal of the Carel du Toit Centre’s pre-school program is to facilitate language acquisition for hearing-impaired children in a natural, developmentally appropriate, and enjoyable manner, setting a strong foundation for their transition to the foundation phase. Our language-enriched program offers small class sizes to ensure individualised attention, addressing the specific language delay needs of each child.

A group of young children and an adult are sitting together on a colorful play mat in a classroom, engaged in a shared reading activity. The adult, wearing glasses and a light blue shirt, is holding a vibrant children's book while the children, who wear glasses and hearing aids, attentively look at the pages. One child in a navy blue tracksuit with a school logo is pointing at the book. The background includes shelves, toys, and a dollhouse, creating a warm and inviting learning environment.

Language learning is centered around weekly themes, with each week beginning with an outing or on-site experience related to the theme. The program emphasises experiential learning, allowing children to actively engage with language and concepts before vocabulary is formally introduced. These experiences are then documented in a story chart, which serves as a guide for vocabulary and language structure goals. Parents receive a copy of the story chart to facilitate consistent language practice at home, as their support is crucial for the child’s language development.
Our Grade R classes align with the CAPS curriculum prescribed by the Western Cape Education Department, and we have tailored a developmentally appropriate version of this curriculum for our Pre-Grade R classes to cater specifically to the younger children with hearing impairments.

FOUNDATION PHASE

Learners participate in a language-rich program tailored to enhance their communication skills, while a variety of extracurricular activities provide them with a solid foundation for sports and culture, whether they transition to mainstream schools or specialised institutions for learners with special educational needs. Class sizes are adjusted each year to meet the unique requirements of different age groups, ensuring personalised attention and support for every learner.

BEFORE AND AFTERCARE

Two young girls sit closely together on a yellow, polka-dotted cushion in a cozy reading corner. One girl is reading a picture book aloud, while the other listens attentively. Both are wearing navy school uniforms and have braided hairstyles. Books and cushions are scattered around on the blue carpeted floor, creating a relaxed, inviting learning environment.

BEFORECARE

Children who arrive at school early benefit from before-care services, where they are supervised by dedicated staff.

Before-care also includes providing a meal to ensure that students do not begin their school day feeling hungry.

AFTERCARE

The aftercare service at the Carel du Toit Centre provides a nurturing environment for our children. Upon arrival, they are greeted with lunch to help fuel their afternoon activities.
Our aftercare facility has an outdoor and indoor play area for rainy days. This safe and engaging space allows children to play and explore freely.

The continued success of our aftercare program relies on monetary donations and the generous sponsorship of goods, and we are deeply grateful to all who contribute. If you would like to support this important service in any way, please feel free to contact the Centre. Your generosity makes a meaningful difference in the lives of our children.

The background is plain white, drawing attention to the child and the toy.

TRANSPORT

Many learners at the Centre come from disadvantaged communities across the peninsula, and numerous parents struggle to afford transportation to and from school. The Centre provides subsidised transport as far as possible in the morning and afternoon, ensuring that learners can attend and participate in our programs.

This transportation service is crucial for maintaining attendance, especially amidst rising fuel costs, the ongoing maintenance of vehicles, and the challenging socio-economic conditions faced by many families in Cape Town. By providing reliable transport, we are helping to create opportunities for our learners to thrive despite these challenges. If you require transport, contact the Centre regarding  availability for your area.
