Vision

To teach deaf children to speak so that they can function optimally in a hearing world.

Mission

The Carel du Toit Centre follows a natural language acquisition approach through the maximum use of the auditory modality and the application of auditory verbal principles.

  • We believe that the hearing impaired child has the same capacity to acquire functional spoken language as hearing children.
  • The hearing impaired child must be exposed to day-long listening through the use of appropriate hearing aids or a cochlear implant.
  • A normal hearing environment is created – the same as for hearing children – where the hearing impaired child learns language through natural experiences and interaction.
  • The intensive language learning environment leads the child to linguistic competence. This must extend into the school years and become a way of life.
